Democrats for Israel Los Angeles, a Democratic Club focused on the Pro-Israel community of Southern California announced a campaign against Republican Congressmen who opposed the the Israel aid package in 2007 because it also contained provisions allowing aid for distribution of contraceptives in developing nations, many of whom also voted, but failed to cut aid to Israel by $24 million by supporting an across-the-board 1% cut in all foreign aid.
Republicans targeted with the advertisements in local Jewish newspapers included Miami Congressmembers Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario and Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Orlando Congressmen Ric Keller (who is opposed by Jewish Democrat Alan Grayson) and Tom Feeney and Detroit Congressman Joe Knollenberg, who despite representing most of the Jewish population of Detroit, has been accused by columnist Debbie Schussel of attempting to obtain government funding for Hezbollah.
“These Congressmembers put their allegiance to an extremist fundamentalist agenda ahead of their Jewish constituents,” said Lachman, “and in some cases they had the audacity to try to cut aid to Israel by $24 million as well at a time when Israel needs our support.”
Lachman also said that the club would also purchase ads promoting the candidacy of Barack Obama and make contributions to California races such as Charlie Brown for Congress as well as out of state Congressional campaigns of Jewish Democrats and candidates who were running against other Congressmembers who opposed the Israel aid packa
This year, the club also hosted a fundraiser for Alaska Congressional Candidate Ethan Berkowitz. Since its founding in 1990, the club had also hosted fundraisers for Senators Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and former State Senator (now Congressman) Adam Schiff.
