After repeated efforts to stop the Durban Conference from affirming the blantatly Anti-Semitic findings of the first Durban Conference. While Obama's initial refusal to participate in the actual conference resulted in the removal of much of the offensive language, it did not result in the removal of language affirming the first conference, which had quickly descended into an unfair singling out Israel and making false accusations of Apartheid while ignoring actual racist and genocidal actions in Darfur.
Pro-Palestinian Non-Government Organizations handed out flyers depicting Adolf Hitler with the caption: "What if I had won? There would be no Israel and no Palestinian bloodshed."
Since the language was not removed, Obama refused to allow the U.S. to participate, stating,
"The DDPA singles out one particular conflict and prejudges key issues that can only be resolved in negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians."
Obama's fears were confirmed when the President of Iran began his address to the conference (On Holocaust Memorial day, of all days), by accusing the West and Israel of using the Holocaust as a "pretext for making the Palestinian's homesless," as if Israel had never made an effort to live in peace.
The remaining European countries attending the conference (the U.K. and France, Austria and 10 other nations) all walked out in protest of the speech, vindicating Obama's concerns that the conference would again degenerate into a farce.
Right-wing groups have sought to portray Obama as wavering on Durban because of his efforts to steer it onto the right path, but Obama's position has not changed since day one: The U.S. will not participate in any conference unless it repudiated Durban I.
The only difference was that Obama's foreign policy team gained credibility by making good faith efforts to change the direction of the conference. This is evidenced by UN Secretary General Ban-Kai Moon, who warned the President of Iran not to be divisive, something that Kofi Anan never would have done.
