Israel, Syria Begin Peace Talks over US, Iranian Objections
The governments of Syria and Israel have begun discussions of a possible peace deal bewteen the two long-time enemies.
Syria wants to recover the Golan Heights, lost in the 1967 War against Israel.
Israel wants recognition by Syria and the cutoff of aid to Syrian-supported anti-Israel terror groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad, of which have offices in Syria.
These discussions began over the objection os the US, who have a strategy of isolation. Far-Right Israeli parties also object to any peace or giving up land. Iran which is also a major funder of Hamas and Hezbollah objects as well to any effort that would not result int he destruction of Israel.
With so many grops pulling in so many directions, we will see if a deal can be reached.
